I bet you were wondering…
For those who have been paying attention: my WordPress blog is now being hosted directly through my domain! That’s the good news. The bad news is that none of the formatting that I had done while it was hosted directly through WordPress.com came with it when I moved the blog. That’s not really a problem per se, but I decided that while I needed to spruce up my page again that I may as well start from scratch and learn WordPress as I go. I have developed websites before as a hobby, but WordPress itself is brand new to me.
That being said, expect to see various changes from day to day as I tinker with this site. I am committed to learning to do this on my own and I will learn faster by doing it myself. I could keep these changes hidden behind the scenes and then wow you with the final version (and that is what I would recommend to any clients as well, by the way), but I work better under pressure, I am an all cards on the table kind of player, and lastly- it’s just more FUN this way!
So, if you see a white page one day (today) and a blue one (tomorrow?) then you will know I’ve got that part covered. And in the meanwhile, I am having the best time that I have had in ages! And now you know where the “geek” part of Social Savvy Geek comes in…
Congratulations on taking the plunge and moving your site to WordPress! Using your own domain is a huge step towards establishing your brand.
I couldn’t help but notice that the URL for this post includes “?p=3#comments”. That’s the default. Most people prefer to show the title of the post to take advantage of keywords. If you want to do this, in your WP Admin panel, go to Settings | Permalinks and select a different setting. Personally, I chose “Custom Structure” and keyed. /%postname%/
Thank you. It is exciting! I will definitely address the issue you pointed out; thanks for the tip!
I see you already made the change. Very nice! If you want to learn some more tips, I welcome you to check out my blog.
I have checked out your blog and subscribed to your RSS feed. Your articles are wonderful! I’ll definitely let you know if I get “stuck” anywhere in the process. Of course, if you notice anything that isn’t here that should be, just let me know; it’s hard to fix a problem you don’t know you have!
Thanks for the kind words. I’m glad you enjoyed the articles. No problems but a couple of tips for you:
I noticee that you don’t have an avatar. I recommend going to http://en.gravatar.com/ and setting up a profile. That way, whenever you logon or post somewhere, your avatar will show up. It’s a great way to build awareness. It also helps to cut down on the chances of one of your comments ending up in a spam filter.
Another tip that will help you promote your blog is to join the CommentLuv network. Check out my post on “Need More Eyes on Your Website?“ from July 1. You’ll notice that some of the commenters have backlinks to their posts plus a link to their homepage anchored to their name. They’re members of CommentLuv. By installing the CommentLuv plugin on your site, you’ll also encouraging people to leave a comment.
BTW – Thanks for the tweet!
I’ve been to gravetar and set up an account, but the avatar isn’t showing up for some reason. I will definitely check out CommentLuv; I hadn’t heard of that until just yesterday. It seems that no matter how much you know there is always more to know! That’s one of the things that I like best about this profession- I never get bored!
